Compress an image to 50 KB in your browser

A 50 KB ceiling fits avatars, forum signatures, and forms with strict upload limits. The file is compressed locally and never leaves this tab.

Switch the image compressor to target size, enter 50 KB, and choose WebP or JPEG. The encoder lowers quality until the file fits, then shows the result and the achieved size before you download.

Open the image compressorThe compressor runs entirely in this tab; the image is not uploaded.

Fifty kilobytes is tight for a photograph. At that ceiling, detail in foliage, fabric, and gradients is the first thing to go, so the best results usually come from resizing before compressing. A 400–600 pixel image can look clean at 50 KB; a 3000 pixel original rarely can.

Graphics with flat colors, screenshots of text, and logos behave differently. They compress well in WebP or PNG, and a lossless PNG may even reach the target when the palette is small. Check the preview rather than assuming one format is always smaller.

How to hit the target

  1. 1

Open the compressor and pick target size

Open the image compressor and switch the size mode from quality to target size.

  2. 2

    Enter 50 KB

Type 50 in the target field. The tool treats it as an upper bound, not a fixed output size.

  3. 3

    Choose the output format

Use WebP for the smallest file at good quality, or JPEG when the upload form rejects WebP.

  4. 4

    Upload, compare, download

Drop the image, inspect the compressed preview and the reported size, then download if the detail holds up.

What to check at 50 KB

Resize before quality

If the result is blurry, reduce the pixel dimensions first. Fewer pixels at moderate quality usually look better than many pixels at minimum quality.

Prefer WebP or JPEG

PNG keeps every pixel and often exceeds 50 KB for photos. Keep PNG only when transparency or sharp UI edges matter.

Inspect at 100%

Check faces, text edges, and smooth gradients at full size. Artifacts that are invisible in a thumbnail can be obvious on the page.

Common questions

Can every photo reach 50 KB?

Not without resizing. A large, detailed photo may need a smaller pixel width before 50 KB is realistic; the compressor can reduce dimensions as well as quality.

Should I use PNG for a 50 KB limit?

PNG is lossless and usually larger than JPEG or WebP for photographs. Use JPEG or WebP for photos and keep PNG when transparency or crisp interface edges are required.

Is the 50 KB target exact?

The target is an upper bound. Binary search adjusts quality until the encoded file fits under 50 KB, so the result is usually slightly smaller, and the tool reports whether the target was met.
